Nolan Arenado's Journey: From Colorado Rockies to NL West Return (2026)

Nolan Arenado's Return to the NL West: A Tale of New Beginnings and Fond Memories

Nolan Arenado, the veteran baseball player, is gearing up for a new chapter in his illustrious career as he returns to the National League West (NL West) with the Arizona Diamondbacks. This move marks a significant turning point in his journey, as he reflects on his time with the Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals.

A Rocky Start and a Record-Breaking Extension

Nolan Arenado's professional baseball journey began when he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut on April 28, 2013, and quickly became a force to be reckoned with. Over eight years with the Rockies, Arenado achieved numerous accolades, including eight Gold Gloves, four Platinum Gloves, four Silver Sluggers, five All-Star appearances, and two playoff runs. However, his time in Colorado wasn't without challenges, as he faced a public feud with the front office in 2020, leading to his trade.

On February 1, 2021, Arenado signed an eight-year, $260 million contract extension with the St. Louis Cardinals, a move that solidified his status as one of the highest-paid players in baseball. During his five years in St. Louis, he continued to excel, winning two more Gold Gloves, earning a Silver Slugger, making three All-Star appearances, and contributing to two playoff runs. Despite these successes, 2025 proved to be a down year for Arenado and the Cardinals, setting the stage for his latest move.

A Return to the NL West

In a surprising turn of events, Nolan Arenado was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, reuniting him with the NL West division. This move brings him back to a familiar territory, as he grew up in this division and has a deep understanding of the ballparks and players.

"I’m really excited about [returning to the NL West]," Arenado expressed. "I know the division well, but there’s a lot of new players and pitchers. I grew up in this division, so adjusting to it should be manageable."

High Expectations and Fond Memories

As always, Arenado enters his new season with high expectations for both himself and his team. He believes the Diamondbacks have a strong offense, even without his presence, and he's determined to make a significant impact.

"I think this team is really good," he stated. "This offense is already a Top-10 offense without me, but I believe I can enhance it. I'm making adjustments to play at my best."

Despite his excitement for the future, Arenado also cherishes his memories of the Colorado Rockies. He fondly recalls his teammates, including Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki, Dustin Morneau, Carlos González, Trevor Story, Charlie Blackmon, and DJ LeMahieu. Despite the passage of time, he maintains connections with many of them, including Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela, whom he played with from 2017-2021.

"When I see ‘Free,’ I always say hi. Same with ‘Senza,’" he shared. "Those guys mean a lot to me. They were young when they came through, and they did a great job pitching when I was there. I want them to succeed."

Additionally, Arenado's relationship with Warren Schaeffer, the new Rockies manager, dates back to their time together in Double-A Tulsa Drillers. Schaeffer fondly remembers Arenado's dedication and work ethic, even when he wasn't starting.

"I always thought he was the best practicer, and I loved it," Schaeffer said. "He was the first guy I ever saw, other than myself, show up like that and do it almost more than me. That's why he's so great."

The Hall of Fame Conversation

As Arenado enters what could be the final stages of his career, he has been a consistent contender for the Hall of Fame, a recognition he doesn't take for granted.

"Being in the conversation is great, but I don’t even think about those things," he said. "I feel like I’ve got a whole season ahead of me here [in Arizona]. I’ve got to go out there and play well."

Defensive Mastery

To conclude, let's not forget Arenado's defensive prowess. When asked to name his favorite plays, he shared some memorable moments, showcasing his exceptional skills on the field.
